What is the Legion of Mary?

Founded in 1921 by a layman, Frank Duff, the Legion of Mary (Legion of Mary History) is the oldest lay evangelization organization in the Catholic Church. It has grown to also be the largest, now with 3 million Active Members spread across nearly every country in the world (and speaking many languages).
What do Active Legionaries do?

At the direction of Bishops and Priests and in the mission of the Church,

“Active Legionaries perform assigned Spiritual Works of Mercy on a weekly basis as well as meet weekly, for prayer, spiritual development, and logistics.”
In the Our Lady of Fatima Comitium there are English and Spanish speaking Praesidia. This is where the “work” is done! Evangelizing works include visiting and bringing Holy Eucharist to the home-bound and to health-care facilities, Pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima visitation to parish families, and, by making friendly contact with families in the area in door-to-door visits, prolife, prison ministry, etc. Amazing “coincidences” have occurred in the course of the work – as examples, statue visitations have brought about conversions, healing, validation of marriages, improvement in family situations, and much more – !

What do Auxiliary Members do?
Auxiliary Members are the praying wing of the Legion army and pray daily the rosary and the “Tessera” prayers for fruitfulness (and “coincidences”) in the works of the Active Members.

Auxiliary membership is open to priests, religious and the laity.
Membership consists of those who are unable or unwilling to assume the duties of active membership, but who associate themselves with the Legion by undertaking a service of prayer in its name.

What (briefly) is the spirituality of the Legion of Mary?
(From Pope St. John Paul II, Oct. 30, 1982, to a L.O.M. group)

Yours is an eminently Marian spirituality, […] above all because it bases its method of spirituality and apostolate on the dynamic principle of union with Mary, on the truth of the intimate participation of the Virgin Mary in the plan of salvation. In other words, you intend to render your service to every person, who is the image of Christ, with the spirit and the solicitude of Mary.
